DIY Projects We Will Actually Do in 2014

by charlotte miller

As makers, we love do-it-yourself projects. From finding new uses for washi tape to creating nautical accents, here are four easy projects we ACTUALLY will do in 2014.

1. To Dye For Napkins // P.S. I Made This

{What You Need}

  • White Linen Napkins
  • Rit Dye in colors of your choice

1. Dip the bottom two-thirds of white linen napkins into the Rit dye for 30 seconds.

2.  Rinse in cold water and dry.

2. Washi Tape Vase // How About Orange

{What You Need}

  • Washi Tape in colors and patterns of your choice
  • Vase of your choice
  • Wax Paper
  • Utility Knife

1. Stick washi tape onto a piece of wax paper.

2. Using your utility knife, cut the washi tape to make any shape or pattern you like such as bunting strings.

2. Peel away the tape that is not part of your design.

3. Peel of your design and paste onto your selected vase.

3. Polka Dot Burlap Pillow // It All Started With Paint

{What You Need}

  • Burlap
  • White Acrylic Craft Paint
  • Sponge Brush
  • Circle Stencil
  • Paper Towel

1. Use an already constructed burlap pillow, available here. You may also make your own. If you would like to make your own, measure the desired size of your pillow.

2. At the center point of your pillow, stencil your first polka dot by applying the white acrylic craft paint with the sponge brush. (Make sure to have something behind the burlap as the paint will bleed through.

3. For a uniform polka dot look, measure out the spacing between each polka dot. For a more organic look, simply eye ball where the next polka dot should go.

4. Make sure to whip your stencil clean with a wet paper towel throughout the process.

5. If constructing your own pillow, double-row stitch the end seems.

6.  Click here for the pillow construction method.

4. Jute Lamp Shade // The Handmade Home

{What You Need}

  • Lamp shade of your choice
  • Jute
  • Hot glue gun

1. Secure your strand of jute with hot glue, making sure to pull it tight.

2. Wrap the jute all the way around the shade.

3. Secure the end of the strand with hot glue, and voila!
